Scripture Text: 1 Corinthians 2:9-10
9) But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10) But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
In today's devotional post, with the Lord's help, I would like to examine this scripture with you, and cover some of these major points:
What has Eye not Seen, nor Ear not Heard?
Before we can really go any deeper with this you have to understand what Paul was writing about here, and to do that we really have to examine the entire chapter. He talks about not coming with excellency of speech or of mans wisdom (which is really just the foolishness of God), or with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.
In verse five Paul said that he did so that our faith would not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. And in verse 8 he went on to say, "Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." And then that verse lead us into verses 9-10.
So, what has eye not seen, nor ear not heard? Well, the answer to that would be the things that God has prepared for us who love Him. You see, those "things" have been hidden from us because we have been saturated with the wisdom of man, and because we have turned up the volume to man's wisdom and stunning speech, and we have turned down the volume of God's power and demonstration.
What has been kept from the heart of man?
As we read in verse 8, we found that if the princes of this world knew the deep things of God they would not have crucified Him. And the absents of that knowledge was what was kept from the heart of man. You see, we were all born into sin. Everything that is in man's heart is that of wickedness. Without the Spirit of God in our hearts and lives, wickedness would consume us and "govern" our actions. But the knowledge of love, peace, and the Glory of God can only found be in His Spirit.
Which brings us to verse 11, which says: "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God." In other words, you can think of it like this: I can observe an eagle or a bear or any other kind of animal, but I can never fully understand these creatures because I do not have a spirit of an eagle or a bear. No, instead, I have the spirit of a man. And those animals can never fully understand me because they do not possess a spirit of a man.
The same can be said between the spirit of a man and the spirit of God. You see, the spirit of a man can never fully understand the spirit of God, and according to what we read in verse 11, even the things of God knoweth no man. Therefore, before God sent His Spirit to us, we could not fully understand the things of God. You see, a lot of denominations and other religious sects will try and tell you that we can never fully understand the mysteries (deep things) of God, but the problem with that is that is not found in scripture. In other words, the mysteries of God have already been revealed. We are no longer living clueless, which brings me to my next point.
What has been revealed to us by the Spirit?
Let us look at verses 12-16:
12) "Now we have received. not the spirit of the world (flesh or man), but the spirit which is of God (Holy Ghost); that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God."
13) "Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual."
14) "But the natural man recieveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."
15) "But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man."
16) "For who have known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ."
Without the Spirit of God living and dwelling inside of us, the things of God will continue to be a mystery to man. But for those that have been filled with His Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance, the deep things of God can be revealed. And what is revealed through the Spirit of God is not revealed through the wisdom of man.
Remember what Jesus told Nicodemus when they had the great philosophical and theological discussion about whether or not man can be born a second a time? In John 3 verse 11 - 12 Jesus says these words: "11) Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye recieve not our witness. 12) If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?"
The fact of the matter is no man can believe, know, understand or be revealed heavenly things lest he have the Spirit of God in him. What is revealed to man, but the teachings of the Spirit.
What are the deep things of God?
The deep things of God are that through the belief of Jesus Christ, through the belief and revelation of who He is (the Fullness of the Godhead in Bodily form), and the event of His Crucifixion (the Ultimate Sacrifice), the spirit of man is now given access to everlasting life. A mansion is prepared for us in the House of the Almighty. None of this can be revealed without the Spirit of God in our lives.
