Small Group Resource: Spiritual Gifts – By Rev. David K. Bernard (AFF)
Spiritual Gifts, by Rev. David K. Bernard (General Superintendent of the United Pentecostal Church International), is a small group resource like no other. I have read and studied many books on the subject of Spiritual Gifts, but I have never come across something quite like this.
Did you know that if you are filled with the Holy Ghost -- with the evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit has given the utterance (according to Acts 2:4) – you are already equipped with each of the nine Spiritual Gifts that the Apostle Paul wrote about in I Corinthians 12?
Small Group Package: $34.99
Paperback Book: Starting at $9.95
Who is This Resource For?
Believe it or not, Spiritual Gifts are a very popular subject with both mature saints and New Born Believers, which is how it should be. In fact, the Apostle Paul was emphatic about the New Testament church being, not only familiar with the nine Gifts of the Spirit, but to actively exercise them as well.
I have been part of the Body of Christ (baptized in Jesus Name, filled with the Holy Ghost, and living as much of a Holy life as I can) for over 10 years now. But I have been in/and part of church community my entire life. I don’t say that brag, but I say that to say this: Since my conversion and discipleship walk with the Lord, I have found that some seek out Spiritual Gifts for the wrong reasons.
In fact, I want to give a short word of caution. There are some that put a type of hierarchy or good, better, and best scale to the nine Gifts. It is true, Paul did mention to seek out the “best” gifts, but if we are coming to the Spiritual Gifts with the mindset that one is better than the other, and in so doing, having the attitude that one saint is better than other because they are operating with a “better” Gift, I am of the belief that if this is our attitude, then we are treading on dangerous ground.
This resource is for anyone, with the right mindset, who has the desire to be used in the Gifts for the ultimate purpose of bringing God glory and advancing His Kingdom.
What Will This Resource Help You Do?
If you come to this study in the right spirit and with the right mindset, I am of the belief that this resource will not only educate you in each of the nine Gifts of the Spirit, but with combining scriptural analysis with contemporary-practical-real-life examples, you will become more consciously aware of when the Spirit of God is attempting to move and operate through you.
As you may already know, “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” (Psalms 111:10, Proverbs 9:10). Or without adding to the scripture, let's say the infancy of wisdom. I am of the belief that the attainment of knowledge and understanding of Spiritual Gifts is the maturity of wisdom.
We know that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty, but understand that God is a God of order. Through His Spirit, He has given us freedom, but when stepping out on faith and exercising the Gifts that are within us, we must remember to use wisdom.
A good analogy to keep in mind is attempting to give a set of Porsche keys to a child. I am sure you can imagine doing something like this would probably cause more harm than good. Remember “the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets” (1Corinthans 14:32).
I say that to say this: I encourage you to step out in faith and let God use you according to your faith, but stay humble and submit to your pastor and church leadership team.
In my personal opinion, this resource is by-far the best I have found on the subject of Spiritual Gifts, and the remarkable teaching ministry of Rev. David K. Bernard is extraordinary. Through his anointed ministry and leadership, this resource will not only inform you, but it will train you for one of the greatest ministries the church has ever been known for.
The Best Part
In my personal opinion, I was fond of both the book itself and the video sessions. Now, why do I say that the video sessions are the best part? Some might say that the group discussions that come with this resource are the best part. Personally, I do think that these group discussions are valuable, and in all actuality, can aid you in having a more robust understanding of the material being taught.
However, I did not go through this material in a group. But as I stated earlier, this makes for a perfect training resource for both church leadership, laity, as well as the faithful saint.
What Would Make it Even Better?
Now, as for negatives…
To be honest with you, I found this resource to be extremely well done. The video sessions are extraordinary, the book is an enriching read and, if you are using this in a small group setting, the facilitator's guide and group interaction takes this teaching to a whole new level.
I highly encourage you to invest in this small group resource and keep it with you as a soulwinning and discipleship tool that you can refer back to whenever you are trying to minister to someone and help them take their walk with God to a new level.
How it Changed My Life
Now, for what you are really interested in. How did this resource change my life?
As I mentioned before, in my 20+ years of being a part of the Body of Christ, I have found that most (not all) tend to desire to be used in the Gifts for the wrong reasons.
Many (again, not all) seem to think or have the attitude that one gift is better than the other. And many tend to believe that if you are not operating in the gift that they think is the "best" gift, then you must not be as spiritual or as close to God as they are.
To me, this is walking out into dangerous territory. In other words, where the Gifts are meant to encourage, edify, strengthen, and grow the faith of each member of the Body; not being careful to use wisdom and to be quick to judge rather than operate in love could actually end up having a reverse affect on the Body -- instead of spiritual healing and uplifting, what could actually take place is spiritual abuse.
In fact, I feel the Spirit of the Lord bringing back to the forefront of my mind what Paul said in I Corinthians 13:2, "And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing."
You see, it doesn't matter what gift you operate in, if you have not love (charity), your gift has no spiritual value.
With all that said, I like how Rev. David Bernard put it, "The 'best' gift is the gift that is needed at that moment", and I will just add that that one gift that is exercised at the right moment and operated in love, can never fail.
How did this resource change my life? It changed my life because now I know and understand the nine Gifts more thoroughly and I am more aware of when the Spirit of God is working through me then I have ever noticed before. Praise be to God!
As I bring this review to a close, I highly encourage you to make an investment in yourself and in your Spiritual Growth today. I know that you will be glad you did. It is time to know fully what gifts the Lord has put inside you, which are waiting to be expressed through you.
Just as much as you desire to be used in the Gifts, God desires to operate the Gifts of His Spirit through you. Do some focused prayer and soul searching, make sure your heart is right, then don't be afraid to step out in faith and let God use you.
Now Over to You...
