Do Freelance Writers Need a Blog?

Written by Freelance Writer and Author, William Ballard

Most anyone involved in the online arena will answer yes to this question without thinking. And it’s true that a blog can be a very useful tool. It can also become a black hole for your time—your most valuable resource—so if you’re going to use a blog to promote your freelance writing services, you want to have a careful plan so that it pays off in more traffic, more conversions, and more credibility.

The Dividing Factor Between Success and Failure – Decision Making

A freelance writing blog gives you a place to regularly share your views, insights, and tips regarding the industry that you are knowledgeable in. If you have a lot to say, or a lot you want to share with visitors to your website, and with your target audience in general, a freelance writing blog is one of the best ways to go.

A freelance writing blog is a great way to bring more traffic to your writing website because search engines like them and because they provide you with the opportunity to write to a variety of different keywords that your target audience might be searching for. If you have a website that could use more traffic, and that is set up to handle more traffic, a freelance writing blog is a good idea to consider.

A freelance writing blog turns you into and author, and expert. Write enough and say enough interesting things about your writing business, and eventually people will look to you because they want to know what you’re thinking, they want to know what you know. For most freelance writing professionals, this kind of expert positioning is worthwhile. If that’s something your career could use, then a freelance writing blog is decision that you should really take some time to consider.

What you should never do is write a freelance writing blog, just for the sake of having a blog. A blog in general takes continual nurturing and maintenance—there’s a weekly time commitment involved, so if you are considering a freelance writing blog for business reasons, you want that commitment to be meaningful and valuable.

The Freelance Writing Blog Plan

To make your commitment valuable, you need a plan. Here are some questions to ask yourself that will help you formulate a good freelance writing blog plan:

  • “How often will I update my blog? Once a week? Twice a week? More?”
  • “What topics will I write on? Based on how frequently I want to update it, can I plan ahead for a month worth of topics?”
  • “What keywords will I use in my topics? How will I conduct my keyword research? Will I use Google’s free tool, invest in a WordTracker subscription (I recommend Traffic Travis), or use a different resource?”
  • “What system will I use? Will I use a hosted blog system like blogger or will I host the blog on my site?” (As you can see I use Weebly hosting and web development service and I find them to be the easiest user friendly interface there is, and they also have, in my opinion, the best support team out there)
  • “What steps will I take to drive traffic to my blog?”
  • “Will I allow readers to comment on my blog posts? Will I monitor the posts or allow anyone to post anything?”
  • “What, if anything, do I want visitors to do besides read my blog? What steps will I take to encourage that action?”

To make the most of your freelance writing blog, it’s a good idea to spend a little time considering and researching the answers to these questions. Your answers will help you plan and implement your freelance writing blog and that plan will set you up for greater success.
