Freelance Writers: Here are 3 Easy Ways To Make Your First $50

Written by Freelance Writer and Author, William Ballard

Getting started in your freelance writing business is often the most difficult part of the job. Whether you are transitioning into freelance writing from another profession or you are fresh out of college and just starting to get your feet wet in the world of business, you will have more confidence in your ability after you have a little income under your belt. Making your first $50 in this industry may seem like a big mountain to climb from the outset, but you will find that it’s just a drop in the bucket to the money you will earn over the course of your career.

Here are some easy ways for newbie freelance writers to make their first $50:

The Internet is Full of Opportunities

Some freelance writers begin writing with major plans to write the front-page story article on the New York Times, and others want to see their byline in a major magazine. Whatever your dream may be, if you haven’t started looking at the internet for the many job opportunities open to you there, you are missing out on a great opportunity to earn easy money. There is a wide variety of websites online where you can seek out clients who can give you assignments for everything from ghostwriting books to writing business reports and resumes. More and more, people are turning to the internet to find writers for their writing projects, and this means there is a great opportunity for you to profit from fulfilling those needs.

The internet can serve as a great place to earn easy income while you try to land that big job at the newspaper or magazine. Or it can also provide you with a way to build a solid client base of individuals and businesses who need your services on a long-term basis.

Find Sites That Will Pay You for Your Writing and Write Every Day

As a freelance writer, by definition, you are writing for other people. You may be pitching around various articles, poems, and short stories to different pubs trying to get a small nibble. Maybe you are trying to establish a solid client base for your freelance writing business. Whether you have these or entirely different plans in the works, you need to write a little bit every day. There are some places on the internet that will buy your articles and publish them on the web, such as iWriter.com. Other websites will offer your articles for sale to people looking for articles on various topics, like Constant-Content.com. These are just a couple of the many ways you can write your own content and get money back on your efforts fairly quickly. You can certainly continue pitching your articles around to magazines and newspapers, but you will find easy money waiting for you on sites like these.

Or you can check the list below for blogging opportunities that
pay at least $50 dollars, some pay more.

Here is a list of 8 blogs and websites that pay at least $50 for guest posts. They’re listed alphabetically:

  1. Be a Freelance Blogger — Sophie Lizard hosts a contest six times a year for one guest blogger to win $100 for their post. The contest is judged on outlines, so you don’t have to write the post on spec.
  2. HouseLogic — This site operated by the National Association of Realtors pays $1 a word. If you’ve got a good twist on a shelter story and strong reporting skills, this could be a great place for you.
  3. Make a Living Writing — Carol Tice pays $50 a post. Due to overwhelming response, though, she now only takes guest posts from students or grads of the Freelance Writers Den.
  4. David Worrell’s blog, Rock Solid Finance was the first niche blogger to jump on the bandwagon and start paying $50 for guests posts back in late 2010.
  5. Social Alexis — This is actually a group of sites, including The Penny Hoarder and Brazen Careerist. Some of the sites pay $50+ or a link, so make sure you’re pitching a paid post and that the editor agrees on the fee before you submit your final work.
  6. Tuts+ — Tuts+ is owned by Envato, which used to run Freelance Switch. They pay around $75 for shorter posts, and can pay $150 or so for longer ones.
  7. The Work Online Blog — This site is all about how to run an online business, serve clients, and other topics related to the gig economy. They use to pay $50. (Not sure if they are still paying writers or accepting guest post. You may need to contact them first through the contact form)
  8. Your Online Biz — Darnell Jackson is paying $100 a post, so this is another great market to look at if you’re a pro at building your business online.

The Key to Success is Creating Excellent Quality on a Continual Basis - Request Repeat Projects

Once you get your first article sold or you have your first satisfied client under your belt, be sure to request repeat projects. If an client likes your work, chances are they will be happy to give you at least an indication of topics that they are looking for to include in future pubs, if not a full project commitment entirely. For business clients that you’ve written for, often you simply need to suggest the possibility that you would be happy to continue working with them on future projects, and the door to future income is open to you.

When you are first starting out as a freelance writer, it can seem daunting to consider how you could possibly make $50 at the job, much less earn enough income over the course of a month to pay all of your bills. However, the fact is that if you have a passion for writing and have slight skill at it, you can make your first $50 in the business pretty easily!
