Freelance Writers: Here are 3 Fun Ways to Boost Creativity
Written by Freelance Writer and Author, William Ballard
There are some days when you love every word you pen to paper (or type up on your computer), and you cannot help but feel that you made a great career decision to become a freelance writer. Then, there are other days when everything you write seems forced, unlike you, and even boring. On these days when you struggle with writer’s block (find out what I really think about writer’s block here), you may constantly be hitting the backspace button (or wearing out that eraser), or you may even erase all of the work you just spent the last hour or two working on because you feel that it is unsalvageable. Or even worse than that, you may not be able to write down anything at all. Every freelance writer experiences a little slack or lack in creativity from time to time. Rather than trying to force the situation, you can take a break and try to boost your creativity away from the computer. Believe it works miracles!
1) Chat With a Friend
As a freelance writer, you may regularly force yourself to work away from your phone or even with your ringer turned off. Distractions (such as emails, texting, phone calls, etc.) are indeed a major cause of inefficiency and lack of productivity for freelance writers. However, sometimes, clearing your head and catching up with a good friend is just what the creative side of your brain needs. Pick up the phone and share in some witty banter for a few minutes. If you feel like you need a longer break, why not ask your friend to join you for a lunch break or coffee?
2) Get Some Exercise
It is easy to feel uncreative when you lack energy. There is a good reason for this. After sitting down for a few hours or even if you didn’t fully wake up in the morning (don’t act like you have never been there), your blood flow may be slower than usual. By getting some exercise, you can jumpstart your creative juices in a healthy way. Get up and do some minute house cleaning, take the dog for a walk, or head to the store for an hour of retail therapy. Movement and a change of scenery may be just what you need.
3) Take a Trip
Freelance writers can be true homebodies. You may spend hours upon hours each day holed up at home, and you may not talk to people or even look at the window for hours on end. This can do nothing at all to benefit your creative juices. Every once in a while, you really do need to break out of the mold and get out of the house. Rather than take a walk around the block, why not plan a fun exciting trip to some place different? After all, walking around the same street with the dog can get boring after a while, too! Plan a day trip to see an old friend, head to the coast for a much-needed getaway or make other plans that pull you away from the computer so that you can relax and recharge.
Freelance writers rely on their creativity to produce great work and to work efficiently. Nothing can decrease productivity more than having to toss out the work you just spent the last hour working on because it simply isn’t good enough! You can boost your creativity with ease and in completely fun ways when you put some of these tips to use.
