-- John Maxwell
Sharing is Caring
By William Ballard
If you really want to take your writing to the next level and really connect with more readers than ever before, then you are going to really want to pay attention to this post.
John Maxwell is a successful author and speaker, and although he is mainly known for is expertise on the subject of leadership, and he is not just a remarkeable communciator, he has proven himself to be a true authority in the art of connecting.
In the following talk, Mr. Maxwell shares with us three invaluable connecting princples that are essential for every writer to grab a hold of if they are going to really connect and make a BIG difference in 2017 through the medium of their writing.
Those connecting principles are:
Listen to this talk (and take notes while you'r at it), and afterwards I will share with you how you can take this information and apply it to your writing life.
Now, although this talk was geared more towards minsiters, there is still some very vauable truths and ideas that relate to writers as well.
I am sure many of you have heard the old saying: There are writers who speak and then there are speakers who write. I tend to agree with that statement, and truth be told, I believe Mr. Maxwell falls into the later category.
In other words, he more of speaker than he is writer, but I will admit, he has learned the art of being able to connect on both levels. I, for one, am more of writer that may speak from time to time, but my gifting is in writing more than speaking.
Now, what does this have to do with the three connecting principles that Mr. Maxwell share with us? Here are the three thoughts as the pertain to writers connecting with readers:
Connecting Principle Number One - Connecting is ALL About Others
When it comes to being a skilled writer in the art of connecting, you must always remember that what you write is never about you, but ALWAYS about your reader.
In other words, as you sit down to write -- before you ever type one word -- you need to get it fixed in your mind that what you are about to write is not about you but ALL about the reader.
Ask youself, what message are you trying to convey to the reader? What value are you trying to pass along to your reader in the article, blog, or book you are trying to write?
It was Zig Zligar who said, "You can get everything in life you want if you would just help a enough other people get what they want." That is the idea that you need to plant into the soil of your mind as you sit down to write. You need to ask youself, how is what I am about to write going to add value to the readers I am trying to reach?
If you write to empower others you will connect with you readers on such a level that will, in essence, create a "sticking" substance that will keep them coming back for more.
"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care" -- John Maxwell
Connecting Principle Number Two - Connecting Requires Energy
In this talk, Mr. Maxwell shares a story about how he put forth the time and energy to really connect on an emotional level with the congregation at Hillham that gave him is first start in the ministry.
When it comes to being a writer and connecting with your readers on a similar level, as you realize that what you write is never to be about you, but always about your reader, you'll begin to find that it requires a level of energy to really feel what your reader feels.
This is going to require some work on your part, as a writer. You see, you are going to have to go where your readers are and really listen to what they have to say. I mean really LISTEN to things that make them happy or more them sad.
Bob Proctor always says, "You hear with your ears but you listen with your heart."
You see, in order to connect with your readers on an emotional level it is going to require some emotional energy on your part. HEARING is not enough. You must actively LISTEN to their wants, desires, likes, and dislikes. John Maxwell said, "People may HEAR your words, but the FEEL your attitude."
He goes on to say in his book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership (AFF), when referecning the Law of Connection, "Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand." In other words, a writer's words are meant to touch a readers heart before they ask for any kind of compensation in return.
Connecting Prinicple Number Three - Connectors Look for Common Ground
Look, in order to become a writer that is skilled in the art of connecting with readers you are going to have to know how to find common ground.
As we have stated before, you are going to have to go where your readers are. You are going to have to go where they hang out. You are going to have to "hang out" with them in social media. In other words, if you want readers to engage with the writings you share on social media you are going to have to engage with theirs.
I believe it was Bob Proctor who once said, "People only becoming interesting when they become interested." In other words, if you want readers to find you and your writing interesting you are going to have become interested in them and what they find interesting.
Build your relationship as a writer with your readers on common ground and never lose reader for as long as your writing life lives on.
