Sharing is Caring
Here at William Ballard Enterprise, LLC we find Personal Evangelism and Soul Winning more important than Customer Value Optimization or Customer Acquisition.
In other words, even if no one ever purchases one of our products or hires anyone of our team members for any number of writing services, we know that we have been successful when we have effectively shared the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, boldly and unashamed, with a hungry soul.
Many of our clients have even stated that our CEO and Founder, William Ballard, has the mind of a business man and the heart of a minister. What exactly does that mean?
Having the mind of a business man keeps this venture above water and our business growing. It is this side of William's personality that makes our employees and independent contractors happy.
Having the heart of a minister (servanthood) is what makes our customers and clients happy. It is this side of William's personality that shows those we work with that we not only care about their professional success and achievements, but that we also care (perhaps, even more so) in their eternal well-being.
With that said, our CEO and Founder would like to suggest three of his most favorite books on the subjects of Soul Winning and Personal Evangelism, and share is review of each one.
Healing Evangelism: The Medical Model
By J. Mark Jordan
(Published by OWL of Hope, September 10, 2015)
I [William Ballard] have read numerous books on Soul Winning and Personal Evangelism, some of which are written from the thought-process of a salesman, an F.B.I Secrete Agent singling out his/her next double agent recruit, and so many other perspectives.
I admire writers that actually try to articulate the awesomeness that comes with being a Soul Winner for Jesus Christ. However, when it comes to some of these books, I have not been very fond of them, simply because I do not agree with the angle or thought-process of the writer.
But when I came across Healing Evangelism I have never thought of Soul Winning by the model that author J. Mark Jordan presented -- the Healing Model.
In this book, Mr. Jordan briefly touches on the flaws of several incomplete models of personal evangelism and soul winning. such as:
Of course, this list is not exhaustive. There are many other soul winning views that are flawed or incomplete, but this gives a glimpse as to why so many fail in the area of Personal Evangelism.
In this book, Mr. Jordan, goes into theological detail as to why the Healing Model is the most Biblically accurate and thought-process or view we should have when approaching the subject of Soul Winning and Personal Evangelism.
Many do not know this about me, but a few years back, I was in training to become an Emergency Medial Technician (E.M.T). Inside these pages Mr. Jordan really put things into perspective for me when he presented the imagery of a Soul Winner as an Emergency Medical Technician. This section of the book really hit home to me.
I highly recommend devoting some serious study time to Part Three: The Healing Model of this book, and most importantly, these following sections:
To me, I honestly feel that Mr. Jordan did a outstanding job with this book, and I believe that it is major contribution to the Church today. If you haven't done so already, get your copy HERE.
Understanding Soul Winning
By Tim Downs
Tim Downs is the Pastor of Atlanta Hope Center and the Founder of GoWinSouls.com. He has dedicated his life to Soul Winning and reaching the Lost. I [William Ballard] admire that about him.
I am going to be real with you guys for a moment. I [William Ballard] did not grow up in the Apostolic Church, I was raised Assemblies of God. It wasn't until my early 20s that I was introduced to the Apostolic Doctrine -- the only Theological Doctrine that can be found in scripture.
It wasn't long after being introduce to the Apostolic Church that I became an Apostolic myself. I remember the day I was baptized in the wonderful saving name of Jesus Christ, and I remember the Divine experience I had when filled with the Holy Ghost for the first time. It was truly a life changing experience, and I truly mean that.
You see, prior to my conversion experience, I was addicted to smoking cigarettes and even to some illegal drugs. But, some how, miraculously when I was filled with the Holy Ghost, it was in that instant when God took the desire in me for those destructive things out of my system. There was no "12 Step Program" that got me off these things, it was God (Jesus) Himself who removed it in an instant -- to God be the Glory!
I share that to say this: Tim Downs is very unorthodox in his methods, teachings, and soul winning strategies that often times goes against traditional Apostolic views and ways. But despite what you think of Tim Downs and his methods, you can't deny the fact that he his winning souls and reaching a lost and dying world.
Now, I will be honest and say that I, personally, do not agree with all of Tim Downs views and methods, but I do support him in his efforts and contribution to the growth of the Church on a corporate level.
One interesting thing that I would like to bring to your attention is a story that Mr. Downs shares in his book, Understanding Soul Winning. There was time when Mr. Downs went to one of the Apostolic Church's many conferences, and during one of these events, he went to the local display area for the Pentecostal Publishing House to see if could locate and buy any books on soul winning.
He asked the lady at the cash-register if their were any and she said, "follow me and let's take a look". After several minutes of trying to locate such a literary piece of work, they came to the conclusion that there were none.
However, there were tons of books on preaching and other similar subjects. Tim (as do I) found it extremely confusing when an organization such as the United Pentecostal Church International or the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ present themselves as organizations that have the primary goal and mission to reach the entire world with the message of Jesus Christ but don't even have literature on the subject of Soul Winning and Personal Evangelism.
Now, in defense of the UPCI and the ALJC, this has been some time passed since Tim Downs was not able to find books on these subjects. Since then, many books on this subject have been written by very credible and Biblically sound Apostolic authors (three of which I am sharing with you today in this review post).
But, with that said, it was because of that day at the Pentecostal Publishing House display, that Tim Downs decided that he would sit down and write Understanding Soul Winning to fill the empty space on a subject that was apparently not being addressed.
Inside this book, he gives you insight as to what it means to a be Soul Winner. He answers the following questions:
Soul Winner: Empowered by The Spirit to Win and Disciple New Believers
By Dawn M. Kurtz
Each one of these books are short reads, but very impactful. Mrs. Kurtz is probably one of the best Soul Winners of our time.
The first two books that I have shared with you have been written by men, but there is just something about reading a woman's words when it comes to this subject.
You see, as you know, men are logical creatures and do things mainly off logic then anything else, but women are different. They are more emotional creatures. Now, that doesn't mean men don't have emotions, it just means that women tend to be more dominantly influenced by the emotional side of their being, but that doesn't mean woman aren't logical either.
I say that to say this: there is something about reading a book about Soul Winning from the words, heart, and mind of a woman. You see, in some cases, men (since we are logical) usually subconsciously look at Soul Winning like some sport.
Now, let me make it perfectly clear, I don't agree that we should look at Soul Winning in that way, but I am just saying that men often times want to strategize Soul Winning and create some kind of formula for it. But that doesn't really get to the heart of the matter.
It is from a woman's perspective where you really get to the heart of Soul Winning and find out what it is really all about. Soul Winning isn't a game or some kind of sport, it is the heartbeat of God.
In this book, Mrs. Kurtz shares the testimony of her Spiritual Birth as well as the subject of a Servant and a Sower. I really enjoyed the chapter on Soul Winning Techniques where she lays out several tips for being an effective Soul Winner (I believe this is her logical side coming out). Here are just a few of the Soul Winning Techniques that she gives:
And believe or not, there is a right way and wrong way to teach a Home Bible Study. In the next chapter, Mrs. Kurtz gives invaluable wisdom and guidelines as to how to teach a Home Bible Study. For instance:
But most importantly, the key to a successful Home Bible Study is to always invite your student to Church. If you have yet to get a copy of Soul Winner please do so by going HERE.
