Freelance Writers: Here Are 3 Free Ways to Get Paid as a Writer
Written by Freelance Writer and Author, William Ballard
Hello, fellow freelance writers! I am back with more ideas to launch you into this awesome writer's life much sooner than later. On April 4ths post, I answered the question, “Do Freelance Writer’s Need a Blog?” Today, I'm going to show you three ways to make money even before you land those first freelance writing gigs.
As a freelance writer and copywriter, you have a unique advantage that many other writers don't have – you know how to sell with words. Essentially, you can use this skill to earn cash without winning any freelance writing assignments. I know, you’re probably asking, how can that be?
The answer is by starting one or more of the following projects:
Creating, Developing, and Publishing Your Own Blog or e-Newsletter
Do you have a passion or area of expertise that you love writing about? Start a blog or e-newsletter on that topic. If you decide to blog, encourage readers to subscribe to your blog (or e-newsletter) so they never miss a post – and so you stay in front of them at all times. As your readership grows, you can monetize your project. I suggest reading, “Why You Should Passionately Blog Your Heart Out”.
Besides freelance writing, my other passion is ministry and personal development. I started being trained under some of the greatest apostolic ministers of our time as a laymen and started my own blog(s) and e-newsletter, ApostolicChristianLeadershipNetwork.weebly.com. The site helped me build an audience, and eventually transformed into a ministry outlet where I was able to “sell” products and services to help people in the areas of ministry, business, spiritual, personal, leadership, and relational development. (Of course, everything that I earn through this site goes back into the ministry in some form or fashion.)
Which leads me to the second type of money-making writing project…
Publishing Information Products
Thanks to digital publishing, it's easier than ever to publish and distribute your writing. You can become an author without a book agent or publishing deal. All you need is a good idea, a computer, and the discipline to write out your masterpiece.
If you don't have a platform, like a blog or newsletter, you can publish your e-book through the Amazon Kindle store at no cost to you. Once you launch and market your book, and it gains momentum, the great marketing machine of Amazon.com will sell it for you. Moreover, while you'll probably not get rich publishing Amazon Kindle books, you can use a well-written e-book to drive traffic to your freelance writing website or another passion site that will build your audience.
If you build an audience through a blog or e-newsletter, you can sell your e-book through it. As long as your book is well-written, and it contains useful, actionable advice, you can usually sell it for anywhere from $17 to $47. (I can help you with proofreading and editing your book before making it available to your audience. Or if you need an eBook writer to help you, I got you covered with that as well.)
Finally, if you want to make money through a blog or e-newsletter, but don't have time to become an info product publisher…
Monetize Your Website and Blog
There are plenty of great consumer goods and information products that are sold online and need to be promoted – that's where you come in. If you can write great content about your favorite subject, you can easily put together a website that will make money through ads you place on it promoting other people's products.
Each time a visitor clicks on an ad posted on your website, you'll earn a small commission. Moreover, in exchange for promoting other people's products to your audience, you can earn an affiliate commission for each sale you make. For example, if you promote a $97 product that pays out 50% commission, you earn $48.50 for each sale.
The best part of monetizing your website is that all of the sales materials are done for you. All you need to do is drive traffic to your site to get the clicks and sales.
