Is fear of not knowing where to start keeping you from opening the doors to your freelance writing business? Trust me when I tell you, YOUR ARE NOT ALONE! Some aspiring freelance writers never move from the "aspiring" stage and end up just believing that the dream of being a successful writer is nothing more than a fantasy, and far from a possible tangible reality.
And for those that do venture outside the barriers of doubt and fear of the unknown, and try to start a freelance writing business often end up fearing something else - sales. They end up struggling along until their writing business dies a slow, painful death. Others run out of money fast and chalk it up to a bad market or tough industry.
But very few newbie freelance writers “get it” when it comes to the 4 pillars of a sustainable freelance writing business. Most newbie freelance writers don’t realize that… In order to grow a successful, profitable freelance writing business you will need to spend 80% or more of your time focused on the sales and marketing of your business – and not so much in “doing the work” that you are so passionate about -writing. I know that that is hard to read and accept, but it is the truth. Today I am going to quickly outline four areas you should be visiting in your writing business on a daily basis in order to create lasting growth and profit. The 4 Pillars of a Sustainable Freelance Writing Business: Sales: This is the direct interaction we have with potential clients or current clients that lead into new writing gigs or contracts. Think pitches, queries, proposals, etc. etc. Marketing: Getting attention in the marketplace, social interaction, and direct response advertising to gain warm leads from your sales efforts. Building your online presence, community, and writer and author platform. Daily Operations: Saves You Stress, Time, Energy, and Money (Systems), procedures and leveraging the art of time management so that you can scale your daily operations. Service: Over-delivering on your promises to your customers and clients, innovating to outperform the competition and dominate your writing market, driving account penetration through a spirit of service excellence, customer/client retention. Now is as good a time as any to do a health check on your business. Which of these 4 pillars are you executing well? Most freelance writers do OK with 3 out of 4, with sales being the biggest struggle. Remember that even if you struggle in this area you still can build a thriving writing business that excels in sales with the right training, support and resources.
